When it might be possible
- If your frames are deep and strong enough to hold the thicker, heavier triple-glazed units.
- If the existing frames are in excellent condition (no rot, warping, or deterioration).
- If the frame manufacturer specifically allows or supports triple-glazed upgrades.
When it’s not practical
- Most standard double-glazed frames are not designed to carry the weight of triple glazing. Installing it can damage hinges, seals, or cause poor performance.
- The extra depth required for the third pane often exceeds the rebate (space inside the frame) in typical double-glazed windows.
- In many cases, retrofitting may invalidate warranties or lead to shorter lifespan because the frame wasn’t engineered for it.
Recommended solution
- If your goal is better insulation and energy efficiency upgrading to new purpose-built triple-glazed frames is usually the smarter investment.
- Alternatively, if budget is a concern, you can choose high-performance double glazing (with argon gas, warm edge spacers, and low-E coatings), which delivers excellent comfort and energy savings.
